What's the Next Big Thing in Music? by Chris M S

What is the next big thing in music? This is a question that every musician and music lover has asked themselves. The answer is never simple, and always coupled with uncertainty. The most common answer is that "it's impossible to predict", which is probably true but also somewhat of a cop out. So for the sake of this article we are going to denounce this theory. We often hear that the next big thing in music will be a completely new genre that hasn't been established yet; almost as if music will take some futuristic turn led by robots. Though rare, originality has indeed occurred in music, but it's usually either accidental or influenced by something that's already been in existence. After much thought and [more]

It's all in the Voice - Healthy Belting and Vocal Presentation - Janine M. Williams

There is a technique that a lot of Rock, Broadway, Gospel, Blues, Pop, Funk, Metal and R&B artists utilize every time they sing and it is called “Belting.” Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Mary Martin, Eileen Rodgers, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Celine Dione, Tina Turner, and Barbara Streisand are some of the most powerful Belters we know and love. What is Belting? Belting is when a person takes their chest voice and sing into their high range. Belting is considered a “no, no” in the proper singing circles, however, it’s how the singers get noticed and many people feel that you are not singing “good” unless you’re Belting.  Belting is that strong, chesty, meaty sound that everyone goes crazy over, however, if it’s done wrong, a singer’s [more]

Seven Days in November - the Dharma Bum

I am pretty much done with common place conversations and thoughts, at least in as much as I can be. Shouldn’t it be that we focus on art and our soul and expansion of the mind and the funniest thing you have ever seen or others truly beautiful or just plain and simple kindness? Maybe it’s me; I have been reading a lot of Kerouac lately. But still, here we remain, anchored by responsibility and slaves to the mechanics of living.    “You have got to see this guy at least one time!” I’ve told Stan this over and over. “The music goes from the Honky Tonk to some sort of metal to something ungodly. Really….” I paused “….it’s the metamorphosis of it.”  “You have said”, he murmurs blankly, Stan talked [more]

Indigo Girls - Keswick Theatre - October 2011

Gibsons and Martins and More!  Oh my! Amy and Emily and their family of guitars visited the Keswick Theater last night in support of their new album, Beauty Queen Sister.  Any show by the Indigo girls is guaranteed to be a great show, but last night was better than great.  For us, it was probably our favorite Indigo Girls concert ever. I’m not sure what made it the best ever.  The music is always great.  The show is always great.  Amy and Emily are always Amy and Emily (which is even better than great).  But sometimes there’s a chemistry in the room that promises a special night.  Last night was one of those nights.  The Keswick was sold out (standard when the Indigo Girls are in town) [more]

The Death of Classic Rock

Yes, I understand that Classic Rock is defined as music generally from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. And yes, I also understand that the definition of Classic Rock is, for the most part, subjective and created to define the radio format for album oriented rock. But Hey, I am a rocker! I was weaned on Led Zeppelin, Hendrix and the Doors and grew up on heaping spoonfuls of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Pink Floyd. And as timeless as Classic Rock is; I am here to deliver the sad and heartfelt news; Classic Rock is dead. Classic Rock died on June 27, 2011 after a long battle with Pop Culture. Wow, I could go in many directions right now, but I think I [more]

My Obsession with the Compact Disc

There's something about listening to a CD... an actual. compact. disc. I don't know why exactly, but it makes me listen in a different way.  As much as I adore the iPod, it's taken something away from my listening experience. Maybe it's the physical sensation... Plucking through the CD visor, the flaps too loose from overcrowding.  Holding a finger through one, two, sometimes six at a time while I search through pockets.  Cursing when I drive over railroad tracks and discs fly out. Okay, maybe I don't miss that. You see, one of the features I love most about iTunes is its ability to create playlists.  I've got the obvious Favorites, Mellow, and Girls!Girls!Girls! Playlists are the quintessential mixed tape, or perhaps a hotter, hipper, younger replacement.  When I [more]

The Evolution of the American Singer Songwriter

In this article we will take a look at the evolution of the American Singer Songwriter from Robert Johnson to Woody Guthrie, to Dylan, to Townes Van Zandt, to Lucinda Williams, to the Avett Brothers, Langhorne Slim and much in between. The Singer Songwriter has impacted virtually every American music genre because, after all, it begins with the song. Make no mistake, the singer songwriter, only armed with his or her instrument, provides the purest form of musical expression; poets whose rhythmic verse is put to music. It is music at its core; even with a band, the song is crafted utilizing more instruments. For the purpose of this paper a Singer Songwriter is generally referred to as an artist who composes and performs their own [more]

The Big Man. Clarence Anicholas Clemons, Jr. (January 11, 1942 – June 18, 2011)

When the change was made uptown And the big man joined the band From the coastline to the city All the little pretties raise their hands Im gonna sit back right easy and laugh When scooter and the big man bust this city in half With a tenth avenue freeze-out, tenth avenue freeze-out Tenth avenue freeze-out... ......Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out. Bruce Springsteen and the East Street Band 1971. It was a chance meeting in September of 1971 that changed the lives of Bruce Springsteen, Clarence Clemons and millions of music fans; the East Street Band was being born.
